In October 2026, the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, became the center of world youth football. From October 22 to 30, it is hosting the first-ever FIFA U-15 World Cup & Festival 2026. This tournament has no analogues in the past, either in format or scale, offering an innovative approach to developing young talents without excessive psychological pressure.
The first-ever U-15 World Cup is staggering in its numbers. Delegations from approximately 190 countries—FIFA member associations—have gathered in Baku.
Number of participants: Around 4,000 young players, coaches, and officials are participating in the tournament.
Squads: The competitions are designed for boys born in 2011 and 2012. Each national team's roster is limited to 14 players (with a mandatory minimum of two goalkeepers) and six coaching staff members.
All delegations reside in a single athletes' village, which emphasizes the unifying, festival spirit of the event and gives teenagers from different countries the opportunity for close cultural exchange.
The main difference between the FIFA U-15 World Cup & Festival and senior world cups lies in its focus on development rather than exclusively on winning.
The tournament is held in an 8v8 format. The competition system has been radically changed to ensure all national teams get maximum international practice:
The competitions are divided into qualifying and main (tiered) stages.
Teams that lose in the early stages do not drop out of the tournament and do not go home.
They continue to play matches among themselves until the very last day of the tournament, allowing young athletes from developing football nations to gain invaluable experience playing against peers from other continents. The intensity of the games is very high—some teams play five matches in just three days.
To ensure the smooth running of such a large-scale festival, the organizers have utilized Azerbaijan's advanced infrastructure.
Hovsan Olympic Sports Complex: This is the heart of the tournament, where the majority of the games will take place. Ten football pitches have been prepared in the new complex, where about 1,000 matches are scheduled to be held as part of the festival. Matches often run in parallel on several pitches simultaneously. As the organizers note, the new football infrastructure created in Hovsan will remain an important legacy and will contribute to the future development of children's and youth football in Azerbaijan.
Baku Crystal Hall: The legendary arena located on the coast of the Caspian Sea has received the status of the main ceremonial venue. It is here that the opening ceremony and the opening match will take place on October 24, as well as the tier finals scheduled for October 30.
The official event window covers 10 days (from October 22 to 31, 2026), but the match period itself is strictly regulated:
October 22: Official arrival day for national delegations in Baku.
October 23: Training and acclimatization day.
October 24–26: Start of the group stage matches.
October 27: General rest day for all teams.
October 28–30: Decisive matches, placement games, and finals.
October 31: Departure of the national teams.
This tournament solidifies Azerbaijan's status as a reliable venue for global sporting initiatives and launches a new FIFA era, where international experience is available to future professionals from as early as 14-15 years old.
