George Russell (George William Russell) is a British racing driver currently competing in the Formula 1 World Championship for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team. Early Years and Karting Career
George Russell was born on February 15, 1998, in King's Lynn (Norfolk, UK). He became interested in motorsport at an early age, following the example of his older brother Benjy, who was also involved in competitive karting.

Path Through Junior Formula Series

Formula 4 and Formula 3In 2014, Russell debuted in the BRDC Formula 4 Championship and won the title in his rookie year, securing 5 victories. At the end of the same year, he received the prestigious McLaren Autosport BRDC Award, given to the most promising young British drivers.
In 2015 and 2016, the Briton competed in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. He finished 6th in his first season and 3rd in his second, driving for HitechGP.
GP3 and Formula 2 (2017–2018)A key stage in Russell's career began in 2017. He signed a contract with the top team ART Grand Prix to compete in the GP3 Series (the predecessor to modern Formula 3). Concurrently, he was invited to join the Mercedes F1 junior driver program. In the 2017 season, Russell secured the GP3 championship title early, claiming 4 victories.
In 2018, George moved up to the FIA Formula 2 Championship with the same ART Grand Prix team. The 2018 season went down in history as one of the most competitive: Russell's rivals included future F1 drivers Lando Norris and Alexander Albon. Formula 1 Career
The Williams Years (2019–2021)Outstanding results in Formula 2 secured Russell a full-time Formula 1 seat for the 2019 season. He signed a multi-year contract with the British team Williams Racing.
2019 Season: The Williams FW42 proved to be the slowest car on the grid. Although Russell did not score any points in his debut season, he set a unique record: out-qualifying his teammate, the highly experienced Robert Kubica, in all 21 Grands Prix of the season with a score of 21:0.
2020 Season and Sakhir Grand Prix: Russell continued with Williams. In December 2020, Lewis Hamilton tested positive for COVID-19, and Mercedes management called up Russell to replace the world champion for the Sakhir Grand Prix. George qualified second, confidently led for most of the race, but finished only 9th due to a pit-stop error by the mechanics and a subsequent tire puncture. Nevertheless, he scored his first Formula 1 points and recorded the fastest lap.
2021 Season: This year was a breakthrough for the driver at Williams. For his ability to extract the maximum from an uncompetitive car in qualifying, he earned the unofficial nickname "Mr. Saturday." At the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa, in pouring rain, Russell sensationally qualified in 2nd place. Due to the weather conditions, the race was stopped after a few laps behind the safety car, and George secured his first F1 podium.
Move to Mercedes (2022–Present)In the fall of 2021, it was officially announced that George Russell would become a full-time driver for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team starting from the 2022 season, replacing Valtteri Bottas. His teammate became seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
2022 Season: The transition coincided with a change in technical regulations. The Mercedes W13 suffered from aerodynamic porpoising and lacked the pace of the Red Bull and Ferrari cars. Despite this, Russell showed phenomenal consistency, finishing in the top 5 in most races.The main triumph of the season occurred at the São Paulo Grand Prix (Brazil). Russell won the Saturday Sprint and claimed his first full Formula 1 victory on Sunday. He finished the 2022 season 4th in the drivers' standings (275 points), ahead of Hamilton.
2023 Season: The year proved difficult for the team due to issues with the W14 car concept. Russell reached the podium twice (Spain, Abu Dhabi) but faced a series of setbacks and technical retirements. He finished 8th in the championship. In August 2023, Mercedes announced the extension of Russell's contract until the end of 2025.
2024 Season: The W15 car allowed the team to return to the fight for victories. At the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix, George Russell claimed the second win of his career, capitalizing on a collision between the race leaders (Max Verstappen and Lando Norris).
Public Activities and Role in the GPDA
Beyond his on-track performances, George Russell plays an important role in the politics and safety of Formula 1. In March 2021, he was elected as a director of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA), replacing Romain Grosjean. In this position, Russell actively speaks on behalf of all drivers regarding track safety, regulation changes, and the organization of race weekends.
