Ukraine is set to unveil a groundbreaking initiative aimed at developing a mechanism for compensating environmental damage during the upcoming COP29 summit, scheduled to take place in Baku this November, Ruslan Strilets, Ukraine's Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, said at the 3rd International Conference on Mine Action, themed “Mitigating Environmental Impact of Landmines: Resource Mobilization for Safe and Green Future” in Baku.
Minister Strilets emphasized Ukraine's unwavering commitment to uniting the world around this global solution, stating, "Demining is a crucial component of this mechanism. During Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukraine embarked on an unprecedented endeavor—quantifying the environmental damage caused by military actions using modern and unique methodologies."
The minister emphasized that Azerbaijan also suffers from the mine problem, like Ukraine.
"Our countries suffer from the consequences of military actions. And we have come to understand how much time nature needs to fully recover from mine threats... We are grateful to Azerbaijan for the assistance provided to us in the field of demining," Strilets added.
The minister noted that demining is a guarantee of sustainable peace.
