The Georgian opposition is weak and driven into a corner, which increases the risk of them choosing a radical path in the 2024 parliamentary elections - aggression, radicalism, extremism, Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili told journalists, Report informs via Georgian media.
"The upcoming elections in October, unfortunately, seem to be devoid of substance on the part of the opposition, which, on the other hand, creates a threat. When the opposition is weak, driven into a corner by its weakness and has no topics, the risk of choosing a radical path is high. We have been observing this for the last two and a half years, so we expect that the opposition will be aggressive, radical, extremist," he said.
According to the speaker, the authorities must respond to the radicalism of the opposition with a thoughtful policy taking into account the country's interests.
"If there is a crisis somewhere, it is primarily in the Georgian opposition. The crisis of ideas, the crisis of human resources and the most important crisis of the opposition is that it does not guard the interests of Georgia, but serves the interests of political groups in other countries. In the end, they will be defeated by united forces," the parliament speaker said.
Georgia will hold parliamentary elections in the fall of 2024. The parliament members will be elected for the first time using a new system: the elections will be completely proportional and will be held through electronic voting at polling stations. The entry barrier for parties will be 5%.
