Zelenskyy: Trump supports security guarantees for Ukraine

US President Donald Trump supports providing security guarantees for Ukraine following a peace settlement, Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said, Report informs via The Telegraph.

“There should be security guarantees,” the Ukrainian president said at a press conference with Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor. “President Trump said that he supports this and about America’s readiness to take part.”

In past months, Washington has kept a security guarantee for Ukraine off the table, despite it being a key demand from Kyiv. It was not immediately clear if Zelensky meant US guarantees, or the European “coalition of the willing”.

Trump is due to meet Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, however Ukraine has been sidelined from the summit.

Highlighting five principles agreed by European leaders and presented to the US president on a call, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine must be included in all negotiations, that a ceasefire must be the starting point, and that security guarantees for his country must be provided.

He also stressed that Russia should not have the right to veto Ukraine’s Nato prospects and that there should be joint pressure on Russia.

Merz hailed the call as “constructive”, but also insisted Kyiv must be part of any further talks.
