Memory of civilian killed by French police commemorated at decolonization conference

Participants of the international conference titled Decolonization: The Silent Revolution, held at the UN headquarters in New York and organized by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG), observed a minute of silence in memory of a civilian killed by French police during protests in New Caledonia in May 2024, Report informs.

The event was moderated by Abbas Abbasov, Executive Director of BIG, and included speeches and discussions.

The conference was attended by leaders and members of national resistance movements operating in overseas territories — Guadeloupe, Martinique, Kanaky (New Caledonia), Saint Martin, Reunion, Bonaire, Aruba, Mahoi Nui (French Polynesia), and French Guiana, as well as representatives of the International Decolonization Front, human rights defenders, politicians, decolonization experts, including more than 50 delegates from former French colonies.
