Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar responded to a statement by Syria’s transitional president Ahmed al-Sharaa, saying that in Syria “it is dangerous to be a member of a national minority," Report informs via The Times of Israel.
Sa’ar's comment came as a reaction to al-Sharaa’s pledge that the Syrian government would protect members of different national groups in the country.
“In Syria under al-Sharaa, it is very dangerous to be a member of a minority — a Kurd, a Druze, an Alawite, or a Christian. This has been repeatedly confirmed over the past six months,” Sa’ar said, emphasizing that the international community “has an obligation to ensure the safety and protection of minority rights in the country.”
