German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, seeking to stop the rise in the ratings of far-right parties, has agreed on a tougher migration policy with the heads of 16 German states, Report informs referring to European media.
In recent weeks, Scholz's government has agreed measures that would make it easier to deport migrants and make the country less attractive to them, in stark contrast to Berlin's open-door policy under former Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The authorities also intend to save about 1 billion euros by reducing benefits for asylum seekers, for example by doubling the time until they receive full social benefits.
Concerns related to the issue of migration policy have increased due to a rise in the number of requests for asylum.
Last month Olaf Scholz said that the country must “finally deport on a large scale those who do not have the right to remain in Germany.”
