Clashes between protesters and police reignite in New Caledonia

The French overseas territory of New Caledonia witnessed a resurgence of clashes between protesters and police on Sunday night.

According to Report, which cites BFMTV television channel, as a precautionary measure, numerous schools remained closed on Monday.

The situation remains tense.

"The night was marked by unrest and disturbances across the territory, including the islands of Pines and Mare, necessitating the intervention of substantial reinforcements. Police faced attacks, deliberate arson, and barricades," the channel reported.

The protests, led by pro-independence supporters opposing reforms, commenced on May 13. Opponents argue that the reform, which aims to expand the electorate in New Caledonia's provincial elections, will undermine the voting power of the indigenous Kanak population and strengthen Paris's influence. The unrest has claimed the lives of nine individuals, including two gendarmes. The archipelago has suffered extensive damage, estimated to exceed 1 billion euros.
