Iran and Azerbaijan plan to soon discuss the resumption of work of the Azerbaijani diplomatic mission in Tehran, which was suspended on January 29 after an attack, said Nasser Kanaani Chafi, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran, Report informs via TASS.
“Plans for the visit of Azerbaijani officials to Iran are at the coordination stage, and I cannot yet tell you the exact date. However, I assure you that we have serious issues on our agenda, such as the resumption of the work of the Azerbaijani Embassy and developments in the South Caucasus,” Fars agency quoted him as saying. “The return of Azerbaijani diplomats to Tehran would be a good sign, and we hope that we will soon be able to see this happen.”
Relations between Baku and Tehran worsened after the armed attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran in January 2023, as a result of which the head of the diplomatic mission’s security was killed and two of his colleagues were injured. After the incident, the Azerbaijani embassy suspended diplomatic activities, and most of its staff and their family members were evacuated to Azerbaijan. There were only five people left at the diplomatic mission, who guarded the administrative building and property of the embassy, but did not conduct diplomatic activities.
On Monday, the Azerbaijani state television AzTV announced that the criminal who committed an armed attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court of Iran.
