A new mass grave was uncovered during excavations in a former military base in Khelvachauri region of Georgia's Adjara district, the local bureau of Report informs, citing Adjara TV channel.

The remains of 29 people, who were shot during the Soviet-era repression of the 1930s, have been found in the sixth mass grave. DNA tests will be performed to determine the sex and age of the victims of repression.

Eder Maharadze, a participant in the expedition, said that all the victims had their hands tied behind their backs and had bullet marks on their heads. The expert noted that the remains will be reburied at the site and a museum will be erected in the area.

During the investigation, it was established that one of the remains belonged to Alakbarov Huseyn Alakbar oglu, born in 1869. According to the archives of the Interior Ministry of Adjara, he was shot on March 11, 1938.

The excavations have been carried out since 2016. Scientists invited from Poland are also taking part in the excavations. It is believed that the area of the former military base contains many unmarked mass graves.
