Agreement adopted by Trump was based on Azerbaijan’s roadmap – OPINION

US President Donald Trump personally admitted that the agreement reached in Washington was implemented on the basis of a roadmap presented by Azerbaijan in 2022, chairman of the Baku Club of Political Scientists, Zaur Mammadov, told Report.

According to him, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev once again demonstrated that he makes flexible decisions in foreign policy.

“The decisions made by President Ilham Aliyev play a key role in the national interests of Azerbaijan, as well as in the development and success of the Azerbaijani state,” Mammadov noted.

He pointed out that although the Washington meeting referred to the 30-year history of the war, it should also be mentioned that even before that, Armenians had claims to Karabakh and Eastern Zangazur.

“There were also interests of certain countries under the guise of resettling Armenians in the region and raising the so-called Armenian question. Despite the fact that the Biden–Blinken administration, Macron, the European Union, the Council of Europe, as well as the European Parliament, from time to time tried to force Azerbaijan to make certain concessions on this issue, all their attempts completely failed, and President Ilham Aliyev put an end to a matter that had lasted for centuries,” Zaur Mammadov stated.

The political analyst stressed that Azerbaijan had long been subjected to various political and diplomatic pressures:

“But President Ilham Aliyev did not back down. This is definitely a trait inherent to a true leader. It is clear that in the history of every state and nation there are different leaders – they either lead their people into the abyss or, on the contrary, bring them to prosperity. President Ilham Aliyev, after two centuries, brought victory to the Azerbaijani people and, as a result, took an important step toward the development of Azerbaijani statehood.”

Mammadov also drew attention to Azerbaijan’s growing authority on the international stage:

“The forces that once tried to speak to Azerbaijan in the language of pressure must now accept today’s reality – and they are doing so. They see that Azerbaijan, thanks to its strong leader, is clearly achieving recognition of its demands. For example, the Washington agreement includes exactly the conditions that Azerbaijan had rightfully put forward. Here, we must definitely highlight the unhindered establishment of communications between the main part of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group, and the recognition that Karabakh is an internal matter of Azerbaijan.

In all these matters, Azerbaijan achieved its goals, and ultimately its demands were reflected in the declaration. The Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, undertook an obligation before U.S. President Donald Trump to implement Azerbaijan’s demands.”
