The US federal government has about 200,000 Bitcoin, President Donald Trump said at a forum dedicated to cryptocurrencies at the White House, Report informs.
“The federal government is already among the largest holders of bitcoin. These funds will form the basis of the new federal reserve,” the White House head emphasized.
He also expressed regret that previous US administrations, especially Joe Biden, sold tens of thousands of bitcoins, which would now be worth billions of dollars.
“The US government will no longer sell bitcoins. I don’t know if that’s right. And who knows? But so far it’s been the right approach.”
According to him, the US Treasury and Commerce Departments will study additional methods of accumulating bitcoins for reserves.
Earlier, Trump signed an executive order on the formation of a strategic cryptocurrency bitcoin reserve.
