SOCAR VP: Countries face challenges in developing power grids for green energy transmission

Azerbaijan, like many other nations worldwide, faces challenges in developing its power grids to accommodate the transmission of green energy, said Afgan Isayev, Vice President of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), who spoke at the Baku Energy Forum, according to Report.

"SOCAR plays a crucial role in implementing measures to decarbonize Azerbaijan's economy. The State Oil Company is also executing projects to transition to clean energy, but we aim to be a source of green energy as well. However, we are encountering obstacles, with one of the main issues being the limitations of the power grid," Isayev stated.

He clarified that these limitations pertain to the low capacity of power grids to transmit green energy, a problem prevalent in the United States, European Union countries, and Azerbaijan is no exception.

Isayev noted several potential solutions to this challenge. One option involves installing energy storage battery systems.

"Although this proves quite expensive, we hope that advancing technologies will significantly reduce costs and accelerate the implementation of these systems," he said.

Another proposed solution is creating additional base load capacities.

"We could also consider combining these two approaches," Isayev said.

He further mentioned that the government and the Ministry of Energy are currently working to improve the electricity networks, enabling the reception and transmission of green energy to be adapted into the overall power grid.
