Since the last week of January, Azerbaijan has started unscheduled gas supplies to Turkey at Ankara's request due to increased consumption and a sharp reduction in supplies from Iran.
Report learned from an informed source in SOCAR that, at the request of the Turkish side, Azerbaijan Gas Supply Company (AGSC) will additional gas volumes to Turkey.
Turkey's gas consumption peaked in January 2022, reaching almost 290 million cubic meters per day. On January 19, Iran sharply reduced fuel supplies that cover about 16% of Turkey's gas needs, after which Ankara turned to Azerbaijan for additional volumes, sources in the State Oil Company said.
"Additional volumes of gas have been supplied from the last week of January and will last until about February 20," the source said. Gas is supplied through the Türközü checkpoint in the eastern province of Ardahan.
In addition, Turkey receives more than 17 million cubic meters of gas per day via TANAP and several million cubic meters via the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum highway.
Russia supplies Turkey with an average of 44 million cubic meters per day through the Turkish Stream gas pipeline and 47 million cubic meters through the Blue Stream pipeline.
Iran, which exported nearly 25-28 million cubic meters of gas daily to Turkey, explains the reduction citing technical and commercial problems.
Turkey's gas consumption has risen due to a colder-than-usual winter.
Turkey consumes 60 million cubic meters of gas annually. In addition to the pipeline gas from Russia, Azerbaijan, and Iran, Turkey buys liquefied natural gas from the United States and the countries of the Middle East and Africa, since it is almost completely dependent on gas imports.
