The impacts of climate change are deepening existing inequalities, including gender inequality, said Mukhtar Babayev, the President of COP29 and Azerbaijan's Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Report informs.
Speaking at COP29 Gender Equality Day, Babayev emphasized that today gender equality is not only a fundamental human right but also a cornerstone of effective and equitable climate action.
The minister also noted that women are particularly vulnerable to the interconnected crises of climate change and biodiversity loss, which could push millions into poverty and cause food shortages. However, he also highlighted the crucial role women play in finding solutions: "Women are at the forefront of solutions, demonstrating resilience, innovation, and leadership in tackling climate issues. We must recognize women's role not only as climate activists but also as vital pillars of our society."
The COP29 President stressed the need to strengthen political support for gender equality in transparency processes and ensure it remains at the heart of the climate agenda.
