It is practically impossible to restore the rock paintings of Gobustan, Director of Azerbaijan's Gobustan National Historical and Artistic Reserve Vugar Isayev said, Report informs.
He noted that rock paintings are destroyed due to the weathering of rocks, the destruction of rocks by certain bacteria.
"For example, we have a piece of rock that reads 'Rome'. This inscription is already on the verge of extinction. We plan to carry out certain work in order to at least delay the destruction and disappearance of these drawings, but the further result of even these actions is unknown. Recently in Kazakhstan, discussions have been held precisely on this topic. A proposal was put forward to restore rock paintings by scratching inscriptions on top of existing ones. We immediately objected to this, since it is absolutely impossible to influence rock paintings in this way. Although, interestingly, this method is used in Kazakhstan."
