Azerbaijan strives to adapt agriculture to climate change

In Azerbaijan, water and land resources should be efficiently managed, irrigation systems modernized, water losses reduced, and soil fertility preserved to adapt agriculture to climate changes, the representative of the President of Azerbaijan on climate issues, Mukhtar Babayev, stated at the IV Agribusiness Development Forum held in Baku, Report informs.
"At the same time, growing plant varieties resistant to drought, salinity, and heat, as well as applying modern agrotechnical measures, are of great importance for increasing productivity. The development of agroparks should be supported by the organization of environmentally and economically sustainable production, along with the application of innovative and biological methods in the use of water, fertilizers, and pesticides," he noted.
According to Mukhtar Babayev, joint activities of the state and private sector are important in this field: "Within this cooperation, new technologies and digital solutions should be applied, and productivity should be increased. Combating climate change requires extensive, coordinated, and long-term measures. To reduce these impacts in agriculture, it is important to inform farmers and adapt their production habits to climate conditions."
"Last year, the attention of the international community was focused on our country, especially on the work done in the field of environmental protection and prevention of climate change. The fact that Azerbaijan was entrusted with hosting the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which is the highest platform for global climate discussions, is a clear example of the high trust shown and successful cooperation established with international organizations," he added.
