The United States has approved the candidacy of Narek Mkrtchyan, Armenia’s current Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, for the post of Ambassador to Washington, Report informs via Armenian media outlets.
Mkrtchyan’s nomination has reportedly sparked mixed reactions within the Armenian government. There are doubts about his ability to work effectively in this position.
The term of Armenia’s outgoing ambassador to the US, Lilit Makunts, expired on August 2, 2025. Although she was appointed in 2021, her mandate was not extended, and the presidential decree required for reappointment has not been signed. As a result, under Armenian law, Makunts ceased to officially represent the country as of August 3.
