Shmyhal: Ukraine will stop Russian gas transit on first day of 2025

Ukraine will stop Russian gas transit at 7 AM on January 1, 2025, as the 5-year contract expires, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said speaking in the Verkhovna Rada, according to Report.

"We understand that the gas transit agreement ends on January 1, 2025. At 7 AM, the transit will be physically blocked due to the termination of this agreement," he said.

According to him, resuming transit through the Ukrainian gas transportation network will be possible upon request from the European Commission, provided it's not Russian gas. Regarding oil, the Prime Minister stated that Ukraine is forced to continue Russian oil transit in accordance with the European Energy Charter.

Ukraine banned all trade operations with Russia in February 2022, except for gas and oil transit. The transit agreement between Naftogaz and Gazprom was concluded at the end of 2019 for a five-year term.

According to Ukrainian media, in November this year, Naftogaz received the final payment from Gazprom for December transit, amounting to approximately $70 million.
