Pashinyan: New Armenian Constitution shouldn't contain reference to declaration of independence

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan believes that the country's new constitution should not contain a reference to the declaration of independence, Report informs via Armenian media.

He noted at the briefing that the text of the declaration is not about the existence of an independent state, but on the contrary. Based on this, he believes that the new constitution should not contain a reference to the document.

The preamble of the current Armenian constitution states that it is based on the declaration of independence, which was adopted on August 23, 1990. It also states that "the Republic of Armenia is in favor of international recognition of the Armenian Genocide of 1915 in Ottoman Türkiye and Western Armenia."

"I can say that, in my opinion, the text of the new constitution should not contain a reference to the declaration of independence. But it is up to the people of Armenia to decide. Of course, the pros and cons should be presented by political forces and their leaders. This is my political position," Pashinyan told journalists.
