More than 15 police officers have lost their lives in a devastating terrorist attack in the Republic of Dagestan, Russia, the head of the region, Sergey Melikov, said in a video message on his Telegram channel, according to Report.

"Over 15 police officers became victims of today's terrorist attack, defending the peace and tranquility of Dagestan with weapons in their hands," Melikov said. He also mentioned that several civilians were among the casualties.

The attack took place in the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala, where unknown assailants targeted two Orthodox churches, a synagogue, and a traffic police post. Dagestan has declared June 24, 25, and 26 as days of mourning in the wake of this tragedy.

Melikov urged the public to remain calm, assuring that the situation is under control by state authorities and law enforcement agencies.
