MP: Alaska summit holds special significance for Ukraine

The upcoming summit in Alaska is of particular importance to Ukraine, as the central topic will be ending the war in the country, Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Goncharenko told Report.

He shared this insight while commenting on the August 15 meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

Goncharenko noted that Ukraine has certain hopes for a successful outcome:

“We want peace—and as soon as possible. Remember, we’ve effectively been at war for 12 years, with 3.5 years of full-scale invasion. On the other hand, there are serious concerns that the terms President Trump might agree to won’t align with Ukraine’s interests.”

He outlined Ukraine’s red lines: “First, we will never recognize the occupied territories of Ukraine as part of Russia. Yes, Russia may control them for a time—just as Azerbaijan’s lands were occupied for decades. But the day came when Azerbaijan lliberated its territory. That principle is vital for us too.”

“Second, we will never accept limitations on Ukraine’s sovereignty. Decisions about our military and defense industry must remain ours. Ukraine will not become a vassal of Russia. That is unacceptable.”

The MP also addressed reports that President Trump talks about territorial exchanges: “We don’t know the details. What’s at stake? Some areas—like the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe and currently under occupation—are critical not just for Ukraine, but for global security. If such issues could be resolved through the peace process Trump is promoting, that would be a major achievement.”

“I am repeating, Ukraine wants peace but it must be real peace—not surrender,” he concluded.
