Tehran will not leave Israel's airstrikes on the Iranian consulate in Damascus unanswered, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said on Tuesday, Report informs via Interfax.

"Zionists must know that they will never achieve their insidious goals through inhumane actions. (...) the crime will not go unanswered," Raisi said in a statement published on the website of his office.

The President of Iran also expressed condolences to the Iranian people in connection with the death of two generals of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and five of their assistants in the attacks.

The Lebanese Hezbollah movement also said that there would be a reaction to the Israeli strikes. "This crime will not go unpunished," Western media quote excerpts from the movement's statement.

The day before, Syrian authorities reported that Israel struck the Iranian consulate building in the southwest of Damascus, where Iranians were located.

The Israeli side has not yet commented on the incident.

Earlier, Iran's mission to the UN called the airstrike a "cowardly act of terrorism" and a flagrant violation of the UN Charter.

The UN Security Council will hold a session today in connection with the airstrike.
