The deployment of foreign military formations on the territory of Ukraine must be carried out in accordance with the Constitution's requirements, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Defense and Security, Fedir Venislavskyi, told Report's Eastern European bureau, responding to a question about the possible deployment of foreign troops as peacekeeping forces in the country.
"The deployment of foreign military formations on Ukrainian territory is only possible with the consent of the president and parliament. However, no initiatives have been submitted to parliament yet. The deployment of peacekeeping forces immediately after the end of the war could be considered an optimistic scenario," noted Venislavskyi.
According to him, the presence of foreign peacekeeping forces could be a positive step.
"The main goal is to return Ukraine to its internationally recognized borders of 1991 and ensure its future security. Troops deployed with Ukraine's consent, whether from European or other countries, must guarantee its sovereign security and prevent new military escalation. This is our main principle," he emphasized.
