Georgian Parliament adopts US version of foreign agents law

The Parliament of Georgia has passed the US version of the foreign agents law in the third and final reading, Report informs referring to Georgian media.

As many as 86 deputies voted in favor of the law. It will come into force after being signed by the president and published on the website of the country's legislative body.

The chairman of the parliamentary committee on legal issues, Archil Gorduladze, one of the authors of the document, told journalists that the new law, unlike the already existing document "On Transparency of Foreign Influence," provides for criminal prosecution of legal entities and individuals who receive financial assistance from abroad and evade registration in the registry of the Ministry of Justice of Georgia.

"The article in the new law on criminal prosecution will become a preventive measure for organizations evading registration, and they will have to explain to the public where the millions of funds come from and what they are spent on," said the deputy.
