Global warming is occurring in Central Asia and Europe twice as fast as in the rest of the world, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said at the opening of the International Climate Forum within the EU - Central Asia summit, Report informs.
"Climate change is a reality caused by human activity, and we all must fight against it. In Central Asia, as in Europe, warming is occurring twice as fast as in the rest of the world. We feel the consequences of all this. Year after year, you see how the snow cover rises higher in the mountains, you see the melting of glaciers. But you also see how the water level in wells drops even lower," she said.
She emphasized that the region's water resources have decreased to a record low level, with only a quarter remaining of what existed 50 years ago. This is the harsh reality of climate change, von der Leyen concluded.
