The United States currently owes the United Nations $2.8 billion, with $1.5 billion of that amount owed to the organization's main budget, according to Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, Report informs.
Haq explained that under UN rules, if a country's debt exceeds the amount of its required contributions to the UN's regular budget over two years, it loses its voting rights in the UN General Assembly. He added that the regular budget approved by the UN General Assembly for 2025 is $3.72 billion.
The deputy spokesman also expressed concern over the US withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO), emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in combating pandemics.
