US Embassy: Consular services not yet available in Ecuador due to unrest

The US Embassy in Ecuador announced the suspension of consular services on January 10 due to the situation in the South American country, Report informs.

“Due to the current situation in Ecuador, all visa, passport and other consular services appointments at the US Embassy in Quito and the Consulate in Guayaquil scheduled for January 10, 2024, have been canceled and will be rescheduled for a later date,” said the embassy.

Meanwhile, Ecuador's armed forces have massed military equipment in the center of the capital Quito amid unrest. The military also received orders to carry out operations to neutralize illegal armed groups.

The President of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, after a series of riots in prisons and the escape of the leaders of the largest gangs, established a state of emergency for 60 days in order to involve the armed forces in restoring control over the penitentiary system. The government's actions caused a wave of unrest in the country's cities - on Tuesday night, criminals began to burn cars and buses, and explosions were recorded in Guayaquil.
