Tories propose Rwandan deportation scheme for undocumented migrants

The Conservative government of Britain intends to start sending illegal migrants to Rwanda, with the first flight scheduled for July 23, 2024.

Report informs via Reuters that the announcement comes as part of the government's controversial plan to tackle the growing issue of illegal immigration in the UK.

In a statement provided to the High Court of England and Wales in London, government lawyers noted that authorities plan to "begin effecting the removal by a flight to Rwanda on 23 July 2024 (and not before)." The statement was submitted during a hearing of a lawsuit filed by a charity organization challenging the government's plans to deport illegal migrants to the African nation.

For the flight to proceed, the ruling Conservative Party would need to secure victory in the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for July 4. The opposition Labour Party, which opinion polls suggest is the clear favorite to win the elections, has voiced its opposition to the Tories' plan. Instead of sending illegal migrants to Rwanda, Labour proposes strengthening cooperation with European countries, particularly France, on real-time intelligence sharing and signing readmission agreements to address the migration crisis.
