Niger PM: Sahel Alliance prevented ECOWAS invasion

The formation of the Alliance of Sahel States saved Niger from destruction by preventing an invasion by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) forces, Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine said, Report informs.

“The Alliance of Sahel States played a decisive role in preventing the destruction of Niger as envisioned by ECOWAS,” Zeine said at a press conference following a meeting of foreign ministers of the Alliance of Sahel States in Niamey.

According to him, the decisive position of the alliance participants did not allow the “militant plans that some ECOWAS states nurtured” to be realized.

The Sahel Alliance includes Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.

The ECOWAS is a regional union of 15 West African countries. The bloc has its own collective armed forces, ECOMOG.
