Natural disasters claimed over 50 lives in Tajikistan in 2023 and caused the economy approximately 100 million somoni (over $9.3 million) of damage, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon said at the meeting of the country's National Development Council, Report informs.

According to Rahmon, more than 550 natural disasters, including floods and landslides, were recorded in the country last year: "As a result, 51 people died, and the country's economy sustained damage worth about 100 million somoni."

The president noted that there was little precipitation in the country in the last autumn and winter months: "This situation caused a decline in the region's water resources. That’s why, it is more likely that we will experience drought again this year."

The president also pointed out that the frequent rains in the spring months, especially in May, also damaged the country's economy.
