NATO flexes muscles in Finland's Baltic waters

The territorial waters and islands of Finland witnessed a massive display of military might as NATO conducted the Stingdantys Veai 2024 ("Icy Wind 2024") international naval exercises from November 18-29. The drills, involving nearly 4,500 soldiers and sailors along with 30 ships from nine nations, underscored the alliance's readiness and interoperability in the strategically important Baltic region.

Report informs, citing Lithuania's Ministry of Defense, that the exercises encompassed a wide range of operations, including surface warfare, amphibious landings, coastal defense, and harbor protection at the tactical level. Lithuanian troops worked closely with the reconnaissance company of the Finnish Coastal Battalion and US Marines to carry out reconnaissance and raid tasks in challenging terrain and harsh climatic conditions.

"The soldiers faced the biggest difficulties due to the mountainous and rocky terrain and the extremely severe climate," the ministry stated. The multinational force, comprising troops from the United States, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Finland, demonstrated their ability to operate effectively in demanding environments.
