Media: PKK may announce its dissolution as early as today

The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) may announce the end of its armed struggle against Türkiye and formally dissolve as early as today, Report informs, citing Middle East Eye.

Sources familiar with the matter say that the PKK held a congress from May 5 to 7, where it discussed an appeal from its imprisoned leader Abdullah Ocalan. In February, Ocalan called on the organization he founded over 40 years ago to lay down arms.

The PKK stated that the congress resulted in decisions of historical importance, which will soon be officially announced along with relevant documents and explanations, the statement said.

In his February message, Ocalan described armed struggle as an outdated method, justified only when Turkish state policy rejected Kurdish identity and restricted the rights and freedoms of Kurds. However, he said recent reforms by the Turkish government and regional developments had made further armed resistance unnecessary.

He stressed that all Kurdish armed groups should disarm and that the PKK should cease to exist. This includes not only the PKK itself, but also its affiliates in Syria, Iran, and the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK), which operates in Iraq and Türkiye.

In March, the PKK officially declared a ceasefire in response to Ocalan's call.
