A senior official of the administration of Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru says the details of the summit between the US and Russian presidents are still unknown, but suggested the meeting could be described as a starting point for dialogue, Report informs via NHK World Japan.
The official spoke to NHK after US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Alaska on Friday.
The official said that as the leaders mentioned a next meeting, its timing will be something to watch closely.
A Japanese government source said while the news conference claimed progress was made, it also said they failed to reach a deal, so it was a rather abstract briefing.
The source said the Russian side just repeated its stance, so it is unclear whether there has been any concrete significant progress.
The government source said they will continue to monitor how things develop, including when the next meeting will be held.
