Germany expresses readiness to support Azerbaijan and Armenia on path to peace

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul welcomed the signing of the joint declaration by the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia and affirmed Berlin’s readiness to support both countries on their journey toward lasting peace, according to Report.

“Today, Armenia and Azerbaijan are opening a new chapter in their history. The fact that both countries initialed a peace agreement in Washington, initiated by US President Donald Trump, offers hope to many people in Armenia and Azerbaijan who look back on a long history of conflict, displacement, and suffering. Today demonstrates the willingness of both governments to address difficult issues through negotiations and make tough compromises,” Wadephul told journalists.

He emphasized that Germany, along with its partners, has long actively supported a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.

“It is now critically important that the peace agreement is signed and ratified by both governments as soon as possible. Germany remains ready to support Armenia and Azerbaijan on their path to lasting peace,” the minister concluded.

Earlier, following their meeting in Washington, the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a joint declaration containing seven points that underline the parties’ commitment to peace.
