The European Union (EU) welcomes any pressure aimed at bringing Russia back to the negotiating table for the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, the EU Lead Spokesperson for the Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Anitta Hipper said, Report informs.
She emphasized that no one wants peace more than Ukraine and the EU.
"It is clear that Russia is not interested in achieving peace. This is confirmed not by its words, but by its actions. We welcome any pressure aimed at getting Russia to the negotiating table, any work towards achieving a lasting ceasefire," Hipper said.
The statement came after talks between US Presidential Special Representative Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on August 6. European leaders were not invited to these meetings.
Commenting on these talks, Deputy Chief Spokeswoman for European Commission Arianna Podesta noted that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has been thoroughly informed about this and, as usual, has been in contact with leaders.
"She is in constant contact with them, especially on such important issues," the EU representative said.
In response to a question about possible disappointment regarding the EU's non-participation in the negotiation process on Ukraine, Podesta emphasized that the format of the meeting and other parameters are not clear, "so there can be no talk of disappointment."
