The head of the leading faction of the European Parliament - the European People’s Party (EPP) - Manfred Weber – has called for Ukraine to be declared a candidate country for EU membership as soon as possible, Report informs referring to TASS.
Ukrainians are now waiting for a clear signal - the approval of the status of a candidate for membership, namely, immediately, Weber said.
The EU should now not have formal discussions about the [accession] procedure, but should send a political signal, Weber added. In his opinion, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen should already submit a proposal to hold the next meeting of the European Council.
On April 8, Ursula Von der Leyen handed over to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky a questionnaire, the completion of which will allow the EC to recommend to the EU Council to begin discussions on the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the community.
On April 18, Kyiv returned the completed questionnaire to Brussels.
