Another 30,000 people prepare for evacuation in Philippines due to volcanic eruption

The Philippine authorities are preparing to evacuate an additional 30,000 people from the danger zone in the area of the erupting Mayon volcano, located on the island of Luzon (Bicol region, Albay province), Report informs referring to the Manila Standard newspaper.

Residents living within eight kilometers of the volcano were advised to prepare for an emergency evacuation.

“At any given moment, at least 8,000 more families, or 30,000 people, will need to be evacuated. Again, this is in addition to those we have already evacuated. You can only imagine how many vehicles we will need to move them. Even with the funds already deployed by the Philippine Armed Forces to carry out the evacuation, we estimate that it will take three and a half days,” said Joey Salceda, MP from the constituency in Albay province, citing recommendations from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

The Philippine news agency informed that as a result of the eruption of the Mayon volcano that began on June 11, 13,800 people were evacuated. Local authorities allocated about $500,000 to provide the evacuees with humanitarian aid, including water and food supplies, and basic necessities.
