Annalena Baerbock elected as President of UN General Assembly

Germany's Former Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has been elected as the President of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Report informs.

She will be the first European woman to lead the Assembly, and the fifth woman overall to be elected to this position.

Overall, 188 UN member countries participated in the voting, with 14 remaining neutral. Baerbock collected 167 votes, defeating her rival Helga Schmid, the Former Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

In her speech, the newly elected president thanked the states that supported her and outlined her main priorities during her term.

According to Baerbock, one of her main goals will be to adapt the organization to the requirements of the 21st century and establish effective cooperation with member states.

She also highlighted the importance of the Pact for the Future and noted the significance of strengthening the UN as a global organization that includes everyone.

Baerbock will begin her duties in September and will lead the UN General Assembly for one year.
