Police names suspect in Washington shooting

Police named the suspect as 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez from Chicago, Illinois, Report informs via CNN. 

They believe he was the lone gunman and said there was no active threat remaining. 

He is now being interviewed by the DC Metropolitan Police and the FBI.

The gunman was seen pacing outside the Capital Jewish Museum ahead of the shooting, according to police. Then the gunman approached four people and opened fire with a handgun, killing two. 

He went inside the museum, where he was detained, police said. Eyewitnesses told CNN he had waited for police to arrive before saying he carried out the attack “for Gaza.” Once in custody, he chanted: “Free, free Palestine.”

A suspect is in custody following the shooting, which took place shortly after 9 pm near the Capital Jewish Museum, police have told a press conference, Report informs via The Guardian.

Police chief Pamela A Smith said a preliminary investigation showed that both vicitms were exiting an event that had been taking place at the museum when the attack took place. The suspect in custody was believed to be the only person involved.

The mayor of Washington DC, Muriel Bowser, said there was no active shooter situation.

Two employees of the Israeli embassy in the US were shot and killed in Washington on May 21, CDS News noted, citing law enforcement, Report informs.

According to the television channel, the incident occurred at 9:15 p.m. local time on Wednesday (1:15 a.m. GMT) when they were leaving the Capital Jewish Museum.

Several other embassy employees were wounded.
