Serbian media: With end of war in Karabakh, danger still exists

With the end of the war in Karabakh, the danger is still there. Explosive devices and mines in the liberated territories of Azerbaijan continue to be a threat decades later, Report informs referring to the material of the Serbian state television RTS.

It is noted that the Aghdam district of Azerbaijan is considered the most mine-contaminated region.

The RTS film crew visited the former front line, got acquainted with the work of sappers and the course of mine-clearing operations.

"Once the largest city of Karabakh, for the last quarter of a century it has been a ghost town. To bring Aghdam back to life, sappers are the first to come forward on the former front line. Since November 2020, they have discovered and destroyed tens of thousands of mines and explosive devices. However, the work is far from over," reports RTS.

Khalig Zulfugarov, head of demining works in the Aghdam district, said that it is difficult to give even an approximate date for the completion of demining work, since the territory is almost completely mined.

"Sometimes some areas are considered not dangerous, but when we start digging, we come across mines, and there are more than expected. When we started there were only about forty sappers, and now there are more than 250 people who use equipment and specially trained dogs," Zulfugarov added.

The publication further writes that when detecting and destroying explosive devices, an additional danger is mines located on top of each other. Therefore, drones help in detection, but the human factor is still crucial. Drones are used to search for devices that are close to the ground or on the ground, but not for demining.
