Swimming legend Ian Thorpe alleged victim of $150,000 robbery

Olympic legend Ian Thorpe has fallen victim to an alleged $150,000 robbery, with watches, jewellery and other personal items stolen from his home, Report informs via The Sydney Morning Herald.

The five-time Olympic gold medalist announced the alleged crime at Paddington Police Station on Thursday afternoon.

“We believe that he’s in the red to the tune of $150,000,” 2GB’s Ben Fordham said on-air on Friday morning.

Thorpe’s manager James Erskine told this masthead the swimmer reported the robbery after his insurance company told him he needed to file a police report before lodging a claim in relation to the stolen goods.

He confirmed personal items including jewellery and watches were taken.

“He’s been away, so he doesn’t know when the stuff has been stolen. There seems to be no obvious break-in,” Erskine said.

“There’s no missing Olympic medals. There were one or two sentimental items missing.”

Erskine added Thorpe was “fine” and “not too bothered about the material stuff”.

In a statement, NSW Police confirmed a 42-year-old man had attended Paddington Police Station about 4pm (GMT+10) on Thursday to “report an alleged theft incident”.

“Officers attached to Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command have commenced an investigation into the incident,” the statement read.

Thorpe has commentary duties next week with Channel Nine at the Australian swimming trials in Adelaide. Nine has also been contacted for comment.
