Bloomberg: Chinese hackers target Taiwanese cybersecurity research center

Taiwan has fallen victim to a cyberattack allegedly orchestrated by Chinese hackers. The target of the assault was a Taiwanese government research center specializing in the development of information security and cybersecurity technologies, according to Report, which cites Bloomberg.

Cybersecurity researchers at Cisco System said the hacker group managed to steal passwords and documents from the Taiwanese research center focused on computing technology. The attackers employed malware characteristic of Chinese hacking groups, gaining access to the unnamed research facility as early as July 2023.

Based on this evidence and other indicators, Cisco believes the hackers are part of the state-sponsored group APT41, which US officials have linked to China's Ministry of State Security.

This attack underscores the growing threat posed by alleged Chinese cyberattacks against Taiwan, which has become a source of escalating tensions between the United States and China.
