Approximately 420,000 people worldwide lose their lives due to the consumption of dangerous or contaminated food every year, Zakiyya Mustafayeva, Deputy Chairman of the Azerbaijan Food Safety Agency (AFSA), said at a conference themed "World Food Safety Day: Science in Action."

"Children under five years of age suffer the most from this danger. They make up 40 percent of those suffering from foodborne diseases. Approximately 125,000 children die from this cause every year."
