Azerbaijani agency, WHO mull elimination of foot-and-mouth disease

A meeting was held at the Azerbaijan Food Safety Agency with authorized representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO), Report informs, citing the agency.

The event focused on the epidemiological control of zoonotic diseases and the real results of the Early Warning and Response (EWAR) System implemented in Azerbaijan in the field of food safety.

It was noted that the control of zoonotic diseases in Azerbaijan is one of the priority areas for the agency. For this reason, the country's status of freedom from plague of small ruminants (PPR) was confirmed by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

It was emphasized that the next goals are the elimination of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Azerbaijan, as well as in the region, and ensuring control of the disease using modern methods.

Issues related to early detection of zoonotic diseases, risk assessment and timely response measures were also discussed at the meeting. Information was provided on food safety control measures and other issues.
