The launch of the "Trump Route," better known as the Zangazur Corridor, opens new export opportunities for Kazakhstan and carries vital significance for the Eurasian continent, Kazakh political analyst Talgat Kaliyev told Report, commenting on the outcomes of the summit held on August 8 in Washington between the leaders of the US, Azerbaijan, and Armenia.
“Regarding Kazakhstan, this concerns the development of alternative export routes such as the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TMTM) via the Zangazur Corridor. For Kazakhstan, which is geographically landlocked, diversifying export routes is a matter of national security. However, these agreements are important not only for Kazakhstan but for the entire Eurasian continent, including major players such as China and the European Union,” Kaliyev emphasized.
He described the documents signed by Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington as “historic” within the peace process framework.
“This not only marks a final resolution to the nearly 40-year conflict between the two countries but also opens vast opportunities for them. Primarily, this benefits Armenia by granting it access to healthier communications with its regional neighbors and prospects for economic growth,” said Kaliyev.
According to him, the signing of these documents in Washington represents the final stage of a long peace process. “The participation of Donald Trump in the signing ceremony is important as a peace guarantee. He assumes responsibility for the further implementation of these agreements between Baku and Yerevan,” added the political analyst.
Kaliyev also sees this process as “at least a signal of Moscow’s declining influence over developments in the South Caucasus and, more broadly, the post-Soviet space.”
It should be noted that on August 8 in Washington, a Joint Declaration consisting of seven points was signed, including one related to the launch of the “Trump Route.” Additionally, the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia, in the presence of the three leaders, initialed the text of the Agreement on Peace and the Establishment of Interstate Relations.
