"Azerbaijan's chairmanship in the Non-Aligned Movement has yielded positive dividends for both the organization and our country. Founded in 1961, the main goal of this organization is to ensure peace and stability among member states,” political pundit, a lecturer at the Baku State University, Sultan Zahidov told Report in a comment on President Ilham Aliyev's speech at a high-level meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement on October 11, 2021.

“The Non-Aligned Movement plays an important role in conveying the truth about Azerbaijan to the world."

He said that the Non-Aligned Movement provided Azerbaijan with fundamental support internationally: “Among the members of this organization were those, who supported Azerbaijan’s just position before and after the Second Karabakh War. On October 19, 2020, a bill against Azerbaijan was submitted to the UN Security Council. The main reason for its rejection was the non-permanent members of the UN Security Council and the Non-Aligned Movement. The reason behind is that Azerbaijan adheres to all the principles of the organization, including protecting the territorial integrity of other states."

Recalling that a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement was held in Baku in October 2019, the politician said that at that time President Ilham Aliyev drew the attention of many countries to the Karabakh issue: "Thus, many countries have recognized Azerbaijan's rightful position. During Azerbaijan's presidency, an appeal was addressed to hold a special UN session on the pandemic. The appeal was supported and a special session was convened. In a nutshell, the Non-Aligned Movement plays a crucial role."

"The extension of Azerbaijan's chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement is another sign of confidence"

PhD in Political Sciences, Professor Sabir Mammadli told Report that the Non-Aligned Movement is the second-largest organization in the world after the United Nations.

He said that there are countries from different regions of the world: "The Non-Aligned Movement has played an important role in disseminating information amongst countries. In the last decade, this organization has become quite active. It is gratifying that this coincided with Azerbaijan’s presidency. Thus, we had a wider opportunity to convey to the world the realities of Karabakh, the vandalism of the Armenians, and we have achieved what we wanted. It is no coincidence that during the war, the Non-Aligned Movement adopted a number of resolutions that we initiated."

Sabir Mammadli stressed that shortly after the start of the Patriotic War, discussions were held on the adoption of a new resolution against Azerbaijan under the influence of pro-Armenian forces. The main reason that the resolution was watered down was the efforts of the Non-Aligned Movement: "The next extension of Azerbaijan's chairmanship in the Non-Aligned Movement is a sign of confidence. The members of the Non-Aligned Movement extended that term once, taking into account our successful presidency. This is the second. It is very gratifying in terms of further growth of Azerbaijan's prestige, strengthening of our relations with international organizations, and cementing of our bilateral relations with member countries.”
