Azerbaijani political scientist Sabir Mammadli has called the position of Western countries, in particular France, on the issue of transferring so-called ‘humanitarian cargo’ from Armenia to Azerbaijan through the Lachin border checkpoint another manifestation of double standards.
In an interview with Report, Mammadli noted that the West contradicts itself, taking into account the statements made earlier by Western politicians when it came to the transfer of goods to Ukraine.
He noted that Azerbaijan has previously encountered a similar inadequate position of the Western powers. “The West pursues only its own interests in any processes taking place in the region. To achieve their own goals, they, if necessary, ignore international law,” he said.
Mammadli reminded that in 2014, in a similar way, Russia made an attempt to transfer military cargo to the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine under the guise of humanitarian aid.
“Naturally, these attempts were prevented. The West demanded that Moscow show respect for the territorial integrity of Ukraine. However, after almost 10 years in a similar situation with Azerbaijan, the West took a different position,” he said.
The political scientist called the accumulation of caravans with humanitarian aid near the borders of Azerbaijan at the beginning of the Lachin road a political ‘show.’
Mammadli reminded that despite Yerevan’s attempts to form a negative opinion about Azerbaijan in the international arena, Baku expressed its readiness to ensure the transportation of goods along the Aghdam-Khankandi road.
World powers and international organizations should show the same sensitivity to the issue of Azerbaijan’s sovereignty, as was the case with Ukraine in 2014, Mammadli added.
