Khaled Akasheh: Islamophobia undermines foundations of peaceful coexistence, equality, justice

Christians around the world need to unite and stand shoulder to shoulder with Muslims in the fight against Islamophobia, former secretary of the commission on religious relations in the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue of the Vatican Monsignor Khaled Akasheh said at a panel discussion as part of the international scientific conference "Islamophobia in Focus: Unveiling Bias, Shattering Stigmas" in Baku.

Report quotes him as saying Islamophobia is not just discrimination against one religious group: "The phenomenon of Islamophobia concerns not only Muslims, but all of humanity as a whole. It is a threat that undermines the foundations of peaceful coexistence, equality, and justice."

He emphasized that discrimination affects the most important areas of life, including access to education and health services.

"Muslims are unfortunately restricted in access to free medicine and education. When religion becomes a target of hatred, the whole society suffers," the Vatican representative added.

Akasheh also called for a distinction between Islam as a religion of peace and radical movements that hide behind religious rhetoric: "If I am asked if I am afraid of Muslims, my answer is definitely 'no.' They are the most peace-loving, honest, and sympathetic people. I am afraid of radicals - those who kill and do not respect others. Many people mistakenly equate Islam with radicalism, but this is a misconception that feeds prejudice and fear," he emphasized.

Khaled Akasheh also appealed to religious leaders of all faiths with a call for active interfaith dialogue and joint action in the fight against hatred and intolerance.
